Vive el Live Magazine Show, la celebración principal del Festival de Arte, Literatura y Lenguaje Lit & Luz. Cada año, el programa Lit & Luz apoya la creación de nuevas obras de arte de colaboración entre escritores, artistas visuales, y músicos de Chicago y México. En los meses previos al festival, equipos de artistas participantes de los dos países trabajan a distancia para co-crear un performance incorporando sus respectivos medios. Las piezas se presentan durante el Live Show tanto en español como en inglés y a menudo exploran la relación entre los idiomas, las formas de arte y las culturas de Estados Unidos y México. El tema del festival 2024-25 y del Live Magazine Show es “Saturation/Saturación”.

Experience the Live Magazine Show, the main celebration of the Lit & Luz Festival of Art, Literature, and Language. Each year, the Lit & Luz program supports the creation of new collaborative works by writers, visual artists, and musicians from Chicago and Mexico. In the months leading up to the festival, teams of participating artists from both countries work remotely to co-create a performance that incorporates their respective media. These pieces are presented during the Live Show in both Spanish and English, often exploring the relationship between languages, art forms, and the cultures of the United States and Mexico. The theme for the 2024–25 festival and the Live Magazine Show is Saturation/Saturación.

¡Acompáñanos en una nueva edición del Jardín Secreto, la tradicional lectura de poesía de Lit & Luz! En esta ocasión, nos acompañarán cinco artistas del Grupo de Colaboración 2024-25: Alberto Aguilar acompañado por su hija Isabella Aguilar, Diego Baez, Clyo Mendoza, Faisal Mohyuddin, Irma Pineda y Javier Peñalosa, así como otrxs poetas que forman parte de la familia Lit & Luz, como Rocío Ceron. Contaremos con música en vivo a cargo de Benjamín Anaya. 

Join us for a new edition of the Secret Garden, Lit & Luz's traditional poetry reading! On this occasion, we will be joined by five artists from the Collaborative Group 2024-25: Alberto Aguilar accompanied by his daughter Isabella Aguilar, Diego Baez, Clyo Mendoza, Faisal Mohyuddin, Irma Pineda, and Javier Peñalosa as well as other poets who form part of the Lit & Luz family, such as Rocío Ceron. En esta charla de mediodía, cuatro creadorxs contemporáneos de Oaxaca y Chicago buscan dar cuenta de las posibilidades de las colaboraciones artísticas, sus retos y posibilidades, a partir de sus experiencias. Concretamente, lxs escritores y lxs artistxs abordarán cómo han creado una serie de obras colaborativas para el Lit & Luz Festival, un evento anual que promueve la colaboración binacional e interdisciplinaria entre México y Estados Unidos. 

Presentado en asociación con el Lit & Luz Festival, la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado La Esmeralda, y el Centro Nacional de las Artes.

In this afternoon talk, four contemporary creators from Oaxaca and Chicago seek to account for the possibilities of artistic collaborations, their challenges and possibilities, based on their experiences. Specifically, the writers and artists will discuss how they have created a series of collaborative works for the Lit & Luz Festival, an annual event that promotes binational and interdisciplinary collaboration between Mexico and the United States.

Join us for a lunchtime talk at The University of Chicago’s Center for the Study of Race, Politics & Culture. Critically-acclaimed Oaxaca-based poet Irma Pineda will share readings from her trilingual Isthmus Zapotec/Spanish/English collection, Nostalgia Doesn’t Flow Away Like River Water (Deep Vellum, 2024), translated to English by Wendy Call. Following the reading, Pineda and Call will discuss the process of translation and bilingual writing, advocacy of the preservation of indigenous languages and cultures in Mexico, and the place of poetry in activist work. Hosted and moderated by Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature, Rachel Galvin.

Irma Pineda, poeta aclamada por la crítica y radicada en Oaxaca, compartirá lecturas de su colección trilingüe, en zapoteco de istmo, español e inglés, Nostalgia Doesn’t Flow Away Like River Water (Deep Vellum, 2024), traducida al inglés por Wendy Call. Después de la lectura, Pineda y Call discutirán el proceso de la traducción y la escritura bilingüe, la defensa de la preservación de las lenguas y culturas indígenas en México, y el lugar de la poesía en el trabajo activista. Lenguaje y desplazamiento: Una lectura y conversación con Irma Pineda

The Lit & Luz Festival, UNAM Chicago, and the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago are honored to present Mexican writer, translator and professor Irma Pineda at this reading and conversation at UNAM Chicago. In this Spanish language event, Pineda will read excerpts of her poetry and discuss the role of translation in her bilingual Isthmus Zapotec / Spanish writing practice. Dr. Héctor García Chávez, Director of Women's Studies/Gender Studies at Loyola University Chicago and MAKE Literary Productions President, will moderate a conversation with Pineda that will delve into her writing process as well as into her advocacy of the preservation of indigenous languages and cultures in Mexico.

Irma Pineda is a writer, translator and professor. She is the author of various poetry collections including the recent Nostalgia Doesn't Flow Away Like Riverwater / Xilase qui rié di’ sicasi rié nisa guiigu’ / La nostalgia no se marcha como el agua de los ríos (Deep Vellum, 2024) translated by Wendy Call, as well as a columnist on indigenous cultures for La Jornada. She was the president of Writers in Indigenous Languages A.C., a member of the UN’s Permanent Forum on Indigenous Matters and is currently a member of the National Network of Creators of Art in Mexico.

This event will be in Spanish and is presented in partnership with the Lit & Luz Festival, UNAM Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, and the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago

El Lit & Luz Festival, UNAM Chicago, y el Consulado General de México en Chicago tienen el honor de presentar a la escritora, traductora y profesora mexicana Irma Pineda a esta lectura y conversación en UNAM Chicago. En este evento en español, Pineda leerá extractos de su poesía y discutirá el rol de la traducción en su práctica bilingüe en zapoteco del istmo y español. El Dr. Héctor García Chávez, Director de Estudios de la Mujer y Género en la Loyola University Chicago y Presidente de MAKE Literary Productions, moderará la conversación con Pineda que ahondará en sus procesos de escritura, así como en su defensa de la preservación de las lenguas y culturas indígenas en México.

Irma Pineda es escritora, traductora y profesora. Es autora de varias colecciones de poesía, incluidas la reciente Nostalgia Doesn't Flow Away Like Riverwater / Xilase qui rié di’ sicasi rié nisa guiigu’ / La nostalgia no se marcha como el agua de los ríos (Deep Vellum, 2024), traducida por Wendy Call, así como columnista de culturas indígenas en La Jornada.
